Mr. Lynch has built one of the largest collections of 19th century popular American sheet music west of the Mississippi. His particular interest is in the First Epoch of American music (1768-1887). He will also discuss his long term project: creating a definitive census of all of the principal music published in America during the First Epoch. This will require his visiting most of the primary music archives and major libraries in our country. He maintains a website on this period of American music at www.firstepoch.com.

2:45 Becky O’Donoghue
Ms O’Donoghue is a music score cataloger at UW, and recently finished a MA in music theory. The paper focuses on music plagiarism: “I look at a recent court case in which Coldplay was sued for allegedly plagiarizing part of the harmony and melody of an earlier song. Using that case, the paper examines what music plagiarism is (as distinct from copyright infringement in general) and how courts determine whether a song has been plagiarized. I discuss the pros and cons of the courts’ approach (which does not tend to rely heavily on musical experts), and present an alternate method for detecting music plagiarism, grounded in the modern practice of music theory.”

Chair of the Music Dept at Cornish College of the Arts. Mr. Devereaux will talk about the evolution of the Cornish music department and issues related to technology and its impact on music education.

Professor of Composition at Cornish College of the Arts. Professor Giteck was recently hired as Composer in Residence by Seattle Symphony for a collaboration process with symphony members and members of local tribes. She will be talking about the project.
